Heading into today s action there are nine one-loss teams in the top 10 of the BCS standing sandwiched between two undefeated teams , No. 1 LSU and No. 11 Houston.
Certainly a lot could happen between now and the end of the season with several intriguing regular season games remaining and those pesky conference championship games speckled here and there.
But as of right now the BCS standings look like a heaping, steaming pile of computer generated hot mess.
And No. 4 Oregon, which hosts No. 18 USC today, is right in the thick of it.
Last season ended with three undefeated teams and TCU being the obvious odd-team out in the trifecta that included Oregon and Auburn.
In 2009 there were five undefeated teams heading into bowl season but only Alabama and Texas hailed from BCS conferences.
The last mess to mirror what is developing now occurred in 2008 when the season ended with five one-loss teams in the top five. The computers spit out Florida and Oklahoma and they played in the title game.
What one-loss team would the computer select to play an undefeated LSU team in a championship game? Assuming, of course, LSU remains undefeated.
Oregon certainly could be in that mix.
If anything, the Iowa State win only further supports why Oregon coach Chip Kelly refuses to ever discuss anything beyond the next opponent. One never knows when an upset is lurking around the corner.
