A clean-shaven Andrew Luck stepped to a lectern in the house of Peyton Manning today and reaffirmed his admiration for the NFL s only four-time MVP.
The Stanford quarterback, expected to replace Manning if or when taken No. 1 by the Indianapolis Colts in April s NFL draft, said at today s NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium he isn t concerning himself much with the possibility he could soon be replacing a legend.
I m not too caught up in that right now, Luck said. I understand that is a possibility.
Peyton was my hero growing up. He was my football hero. That s who I modeled myself after, in high school, in middle school. You never truly replace a guy like that. And who knows what happens. So many different things can happen.
Manning and the Colts have yet to announce if he will be retained with a $28 million team-option deadline of March 8 looming on the horizon. If the Colts decide not to pay and Manning missed all of 2011 after undergoing a neck fusion surgery on Sept. 8 he would become an unrestricted free agent.
The questions have to be asked, Luck said. That s part of it. I understand the speculation. In my mind, too, nothing has happened yet. I haven t been drafted by any team. And obviously with Peyton, that s still going on with the Colts. It s not uncomfortable (for me). I understand questions have to be asked.
Luck, like Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin I, will not throw at the combine.
I made the decision by myself, Luck said of not passing. I bounced it off my agent and my father and thought it was in my best interest to wait until the pro day (in March).
The passers will participate in the other tests, including being weighed and measured. Luck said he came in at 6-4 and 234 1/2 pounds.
Luck said since arriving he has spoken to Colts quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen.
Asked if he s already looking at Indianapolis real estate, Luck smiled and said, No, it s a little premature to do that, I think.
