GAME NOTES: The Virginia Tech Hokies will try to bounce back at home today as they welcome the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to Cassell Coliseum for Atlantic Coast Conference action.
Today's matchup is the only scheduled meeting this season between Georgia Tech and the Hokies. Virginia Tech holds a 12-4 lead in the all-time series after winning its last two contests versus the Yellow Jackets .
After losing its last two and eight of its last nine games overall, Georgia Tech is in search of answers. Brian Gregory is now 9-16 overall in his first year with the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech is in last place in the ACC standings after its 59-50 loss to Wake Forest on Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets shot just 37.3 percent from the floor versus the Demon Deacons, which made it two games in row they were held under 40 percent shooting. Georgia Tech is 11th out of 12 teams in the ACC in scoring offense with an average of 61.4 ppg. On the defensive end the Yellow Jackets are allowing 63.1 ppg.
Glen Rice Jr. is pacing the Yellow Jackets this season with team-high averages of 13.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per contest. The junior has scored in double figures in three straight games after his 12-point and nine- rebound performance against Wake Forest. Daniel Miller and Brandon Reed chipped in 11 points each versus the Demon Deacons, while the season's second leading scorer Mfon Udofia was held to eight points.
Virginia Tech lost a heartbreaker on Thursday night as a Michael Snaer's three-pointer resulted in a 48-47 win for Florida State. Head coach Seth Greenberg has led the Hokies to a 14-12 overall record and a 3-8 mark in ACC play so far. Virginia Tech can only blame itself for the loss to the Seminoles, as it converted only 7-of-16 from the free-throw line in the losing effort. Virginia Tech's collapse at the charity stripe was a shock as it led the ACC in free-throw percentage with a 74.6 percent rate from the foul line heading into the matchup with the Seminoles. The Hokies have a knack at slowing down their opponents, as they allow only 61.6 ppg. Virginia Tech is averaging 65.8 ppg on the offensive end.
The Hokies' Erick Green has been consistently torturing opponents on the offensive end. Green leads the team with 15.6 ppg and carries an ACC leading streak of 27 straight games with double-figure scoring finishes. Jarrell Eddie was the only other player besides Green (18 points) to score in double figures against Florida State, as he finished with 11 points. Dorenzo Hudson will be looking to bounce back from his less than spectacular 2-of-12 shooting performance his last time out.
Georgia Tech is suffering one of its most frustrating seasons in recent history. The Yellow Jackets will need to catch fire and end their offensive woes to pull off the road victory today. Virginia Tech will require more out of Hudson, who is capable of huge games if he locates his shooting touch.
