Lamar Odom withdrew his name from consideration Monday.
Now, six NBA players with impressive but varying resumes, including Blake Griffin and No. 1 draft pick Anthony Davis , will compete for the final three spots on the team headed to London, a person familiar with the team's selection told USA TODAY Sports on Monday.
The person requested anonymity because the final 12-man roster won't be announced until Saturday. The players will attend a six-day training camp beginning Friday in Las Vegas.
With nine spots just about locked up, two NBA All-Stars (Griffin and Andre Iguodala), at least two players on NCAA champion (Davis) will fight for the three remaining spots.
Nine players have all but secured their spots, the person told USA TODAY Sports: guards Kobe Bryant , Chris Paul , Deron Williams and Russell Westbrook; forwards LeBron James , Kevin Durant , Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Love; and center Davis, the No. 1 overall pick by the New Orleans Hornets in Thursday's NBA draft, sprained his left ankle during a workout Saturday at the Hornets' practice facility. His status is day-to-day, and it is not known yet if he will join Team USA in Las Vegas.
Despite the national team's lack of inside height, the 6-10, Davis, 19, was not a guarantee to make the roster. He has limited international experience, but his length and size made him an intriguing prospect.
Now, it comes down to what USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo and Coach Mike Krzyzewski and their staffs are looking for. An outside shooter such as Gordon? A versatile guard such as Harden? Another physical big man such as Griffin? A versatile inside-outside player such as Gay? A strong defender such as Iguodala? Or the intriguing Davis.
The team has been decimated by injuries since January. Chauncey Billups , Derrick Rose , LaMarcus Aldridge , Chris Bosh were all on the 20-man preliminary roster but will not play in London because of injuries.
In May, USA Basketball asked for a special consideration from the Players such of center DeMarcus Cousins and Derrick Favors are not in the drug-testing pool.
